When you’re craving greens, but the ground is still covered in snow, and you’re counting down the weeks until you’ll be able to dig in and plant your garden, it's the perfect time to try your hand at growing microgreens or sprouts! Join us at the farm to learn how you can grow fresh, nutritious (and delicious) greens all-year-round!

In this hands-on workshop, we'll walk you through the process of growing microgreens and sprouts from seed to harvest. We’ll talk about selecting the right containers and growing mediums; choosing appropriate seed varieties and sourcing your seeds; determining the proper seeding density; discuss germination methods; watering tips; troubleshooting; harvesting techniques; and post harvest handling and storage. 

Most importantly, we’ll talk about the nutritional benefits of eating microgreens and sprouts and the many delicious ways you can incorporate these nutrient-dense greens  into your meals! And, yes, we’ll have some ready-to-eat microgreens and sprouts for you to try!

Due to the low cost and minimal infrastructure required to get started, microgreens and sprouts are a great entry point for those interested in growing their own nutrient-dense food.

In this workshop you'll...

  • Get your hands dirty and experience the magic of planting seeds and watching them grow

  • Hear from experienced growers what works, what doesn’t work, and soak up some of the tips and tricks we’ve learned along the way.

  • Learn about the  nutritional benefits of the micronutrients and phytochemicals contained in microgreens and sprouts.

  • Get to experience the potent flavors of these nutrient-dense greens.

  • Learn the distinction between sprouts and microgreens, and the reasons you may gravitate toward one option over the other, depending on your available space, time commitment, and general inclinations.

  • See some examples of growing containers and sprouting vessels.

  • Compare various growing mediums / methods.

  • Go home with the knowledge, confidence, and the materials you’ll need to start growing microgreens and sprouts on your own!

This is the second in a series of hands-on workshops geared for home gardeners, homesteaders, and farmers looking to add a few new skills and tools to grow more food from our local landscape.

About your instructors:

Emily Beaton  Once known as the Microgreen Maven, Emily launched her farming career by growing  microgreens at her urban farm. Aptly named Pocket Farm for its micro scale, the entire farming operation was contained in 300 square feet of vertical growing space in the south-facing windows of Emily’s apartment. Pocket Farm allowed Emily to try her hand at farming on a small-scale without needing to invest in a lot of infrastructure, and gave her the confidence to keep growing!

Charlie Danielson — Looking for ways to keep growing healthy greens for both his family and fodder for their livestock during the cold winter months was what sprouted Charlie’s interest in growing in a small space inside. Sprouted grains and fodder helped his animals get more from the grain that was given and gives everyone a taste for the summer to come.  The taste of fresh baby kale, radish greens or mini basil sure helps mentally and nutritionally during the cold stretch.
